New Honda City unveiled, boasts of more features and space

 

The new fourth generation Honda City has just been unveiled by Honda. It will come in both petrol and diesel-engined variants. The official launch of the car will take place only in January 2014, and prices will be announced then. The new Honda City has been one of Honda’s best-kept secrets, with very little details of the car trickling out, leading to a whole lot of speculation.

Design and looks

The fourth-generation Honda City builds on Honda’s man-maximum, machine minimum philosophy – the H design. It is being positioned as a “cool stunner” that is “one . The styling concept is referred to as “sleek crossmotion” (an extension of the arrow-design of the earlier City). It is based on the same platform as the Honda Jazz, and at first glance it looks almost like the older City. You need to look closely to be make out that it’s actually a different car.
It comes with new twin barrel, four-lamp front headlamps. At the rear the tail-lamps are narrow and wrap around the boot lid. The car looks squat and wide. It boasts of a long wheelbase, freeing up more legroom inside.
The length of the car is 4440 mm, exactly the same as the current car. It has a wheelbase of 2600 mm, an increase of 50mm over the current City. It is 1695 mm wide (same as the existing City). And it is 1495 mm tall. It has 40 mm more shoulder room than the current City, 60 mm more legroom and 70 mm more knee-room. It has a ground clearance of 165 mm, the same as the existing car and with 15-inch wheels with a different alloy design.
Honda hasn’t shared what variants the City will come in, but key features of the top variant are listed below.

Key features

On the interiors, the cockpit gets a layered, floating effect. It comes with a touch screen music system, and analogue gauges in the instrument panel with blue backlighting. The combination meter shows fuel efficiency, temperature and trip meters. It also sports rear AC vents. It has a keyless entry, push-button ignition, touch-screen climate control panel and a sun-roof.
The rear has a low floor, which makes it decently comfortable for a fifth passenger as well. It will have Bluetooth, reverse camera and sensors, and handsfree phone system. It has eight speakers for the audio system. There are a total of four power outlets in the car.

Engine specifications

The car will come with a 1.5 litre iVtec petrol engine that has been improved and Honda’s 1.5 litre idtec diesel engine that is also in the Amaze. Honda hopes the combination of the car being available in both petrol and diesel engine variants will help it regain its leadership position in the C-segment, a position it sacrificed to cars like the Hyundai Verna once demand for diesel cars picked up two years ago. Both engines come with a five-speed manual transmission, while the petrol will also feature a five-speed automatic as well.
Fuel efficiency will be best in class, at over 25.8 kmpl from the diesel engine. The nearest competitor is the Hyundai Verna at 23 kmpl. It comes with a McPherson front suspension strut design and H-twist beam rear suspension. It will have electronic power steering.

What we think

The fourth generation Honda City carries on Honda’s design philosophy of man maximum, machine minimum, and is a driver oriented car. It will be a car that will please enthusiasts, as well as those looking for a family sedan that’s cost-efficient to run, especially the diesel variants. A third shift has started at Greater Noida from November 2013 to speed up delivery of the Amaze and the new Honda City.
Honda saw 63% growth in April to October 2013 thanks to huge bookings for the Honda Amaze, taking up most of its production. Honda has so far sold 4.3 lakh units of the Honda City in India, since its launch of the first-generation City in 1998. The car will be available in 55 countries. Worldwide 2.2 million Honda City cars have been sold till date.

CNG E-MAX versions of Tata Indica eV2 and Indigo eCS launched

Tata Motors has launched two more CNG powered E-MAX range of cars in the form of the Indica eV2 and the Indigo eCS. Both cars feature the 1.2 liter-4 cylinder XETA engine that has been tuned to run on both CNG and petrol. This engine, which outputs 65 Bhp-100 Nm when running on petrol, manages to output 56 Bhp-90 Nm on CNG.

Both cars have been launched in two variants: GLS and GLX. While the GLS variant of the Indica E-MAX CNG starts at 3.99 lakh rupees, the GLX variant is priced at 4.26 lakh rupees. The GLS Indigo eCS E-MAX CNG starts at 4.99 lakh rupees while the GLX variant is priced at 5.27 lakh rupees. All prices reflect ex-showroom Delhi figures.
Notably, the CNG E-MAX versions of the Indica and the Indigo are available only in 6 locations across India. These locations have been chosen due to their well established CNG dispensing infrastructure. This is true of the Nano E-MAX CNG as well. The 6 locations are: Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Tripura.

Both the Indica and Indigo CNG variants have been fitted with 10 Kg CNG tanks that supplement the 42 liter petrol tank on the Indica and 45 liter petrol tank on the Indigo. Tata Motors claims a fuel economy figure of 23.7 Kms/Kg of CNG for the Indica and a figure of 24.6 Kms/Kg for the Indigo respectively.

Together, the petrol and CNG tanks of the Indica and the Indigo allow these cars to manage a range of 830 Kms (230 on CNG and 600 on petrol). Toggling between CNG and petrol modes is achieved by means of a dashboard mounted switch. Tata Motors offers a 75,000 Kms/4 year warranty on the CNG powered variants of the Indica and Indigo.
The cars get two additional safety features in the form of the automatic cut-off of CNG supply and automatic fuel quality checks.

3 fun to drive cars going at hefty discounts

Cars that are fun to drive usually entail big budgets. For instance, if you want a hatchback that’s an absolute hoot to drive, replete with an engine that can propel you to 100 Kph from standstill in under 10 seconds, your options begin from over 20 lakh rupees. Sedans are even more pricier. However, a few cars do exist that put a smile on your face every time you hit the curvy stuff and that are affordable too. We’ll tell you about three such cars.

Fiat Grand Punto 90 HP

The Fiat Grand Punto 90 HP is built like a vault, exuding a sense of solidity that cars under 10 lakh rupees seldom possess. The Grande Punto 90 HP’s ride smothers road imperfections that even cars costing many times over don’t while its handling lets you push the car harder and harder through the twisty stuff. The Punto 90 HP, as its name suggests is powered by a 1.3 liter Multijet turbo diesel engine that outputs 90 Bhp-200 Nm.



This engine is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. The car offers a decent set of creature comforts and safety features that include a Bluetooth equipped stereo system, automatic climate control, ABS+EBD and twin airbags. Discounts to the tune of 80 thousand rupees are currently available on the Punto 90 HP. After discount, the car’s on-road Bangalore price comes to about 8.2 lakh rupees.

Fiat Linea T-Jet

The Linea T-Jet was the first turbo petrol car to be launched in India. Armed with a 1.4 liter turbo petrol engine that outputs 114 Bhp-207 Nm, the Linea T-Jet offers great performance across the rev range. The car’s solid build, and well tuned ride and handling package are other highlights that serve to reinforce the fun-to-drive factor. However, rising petrol prices have meant that the Linea T-Jet is a real hard sell for Fiat dealerships.
The result of the market’s shift in favour of turbo diesel cars is a chunky discount of about 1.1 lakh rupees on the Linea T-Jet, a car relaunched in the second half of this year. The on-road price of the top-end Linea T-Jet Emotion is about 9.75 lakh rupees, a bargain really, for a car that’s one of the best performing petrol engined model in the C-segment sedan class.

Ford Fiesta 1.5 TDCI

When it was launched in 2011, optimistic pricing killed the Ford Fiesta 1.5 TDCI. A year later, even a variant rejig hasn’t been able to resuscitate the sedan’s fortunes. A fantastic car to drive on the curves, the Fiesta 1.5 TDCI is a highly under-rated machine when it comes to the fun-to-drive factor. The 1.5 liter TDCI turbo diesel motor, which outputs 90 Bhp-205 Nm, might not be a very powerful motor, but the solid driveability and fuel economy impresses.
The real talking point of this car is its ride and handling package, which is bettered only by the Fiat Linea. The long waiting periods for the Ford EcoSport and the hefty discounts on the Fiesta TDCI means that the car is available for about 10 lakh rupees, on-road Bangalore, a straight discount of about 1.35 lakh rupees. Go ahead and buy one if you love driving. You won’t be disappointed.

Upcoming MPVs for the Indian car market!

Compact SUVs are the flavour of the year in India, but affordable MPVs are right behind them, nipping at their rear tyres.

MPV, an acronym for multi-purpose vehicle, refers to a class of vehicles that are far from being glamorous. The term conjures up images of people movers, goods movers and why, even home movers. So, substance and utility usually precedes everything when it comes to the MPV space and Indian car buyers don’t really mind this given their penchant for traveling with family in tow. In India, a family can often include folks from the neighborhood too.  The steady growth of the Indian car market has seen more and more MPVs being launched here. The future is bullish too, with no less than six MPVs lined up for launch in the next couple of years. Here’s a quick wrap.

Renault Lodgy

The Renault/Dacia Lodgy MPV is a hotly anticipated showcase in the French car maker’s pavilion at the 2014 Auto Expo. The Lodgy, based on the BO platform that Dacia builds cars such as the 2nd gen Logan and Sandero on, will underpin this MPV as well. For the Indian car market, the Lodgy is likely to be offered with a 1.5 liter K9K turbo diesel engine-5 speed manual gearbox as standard fare. A 1.6 liter petrol engine, a unit seen on the Duster petrol, could also be offered. Built on a low cost platform, the 7 seat Renault Lodgy, despite rivaling the Toyota Innova and the Mahindra Xylo in terms of dimensions, is likely to be sold at a price close to that of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. A second half-2014 launch is likely, with production to happen at the Renault-Nissan facility in Oragadam, off Chennai.

Honda Mobilio

Another Auto Expo showcase, the Honda Mobilio MPV has already been unveiled at the 2013 Indonesian International Motor Show (IIMS). The Mobilio will be offered with two engine options: a 1.5 liter i-VTEC petrol unit and a 1.5 liter i-DTEC turbo diesel unit. Both engines will get 5 speed manual gearboxes while an automatic gearbox could be offered on the petrol variant. The Mobilio will seat 7 and is based on the Brio platform. Direct competition for the Mobilio will come from the Maruti Ertiga. A launch in the second half of next year is likely.

Force Motors’ Mercedes Benz Vito based MPV

A contract engine manufacturer for Mercedes Benz, Force Motors sells a range of Daimler-derived utility vehicles in India. Another vehicle, in the form of the Mercedes Benz Vito, will join the Force Motors line up next year. The Force Motors MPV based on the Vito is likely to be powered by the 2.2 liter-4 pot turbo diesel engine that the automaker uses on the Force One SUV. The Force Motors MPV is likely to seat more adults than the likes of the Innova and Xylo. Expect pricing to match that of the Innova, with an emphasis on comfort and solid engineering.

Datsun Go+

The Datsun Go+ MPV is a unique product that made its debut at the IIMS 2013. The MPV will be first launched in Indonesia, after which it will hit Indian shores in 2015. The Go+ is a sub-4 meter MPV that is an extended version of the Datsun Go hatchback. As of now, only a 1.2 liter petrol engine-5 speed gearbox has been confirmed for this MPV. In India, the Go+ could be one of the cheapest MPVs sold, with budget hatchback buyers being its target audience. Expect a sub 5 lakh rupee price tag as the Go+ MPV shares plenty of parts and its platform with the Go hatchback.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR 7 Seat MPV

A surprise showcase at the fag end of the IIMS 2013, the WagonR 7 seater concept is an extended version of the WagonR hatchback. Given the hurried nature of the MPV’s unveil at IIMS, the WagonR 7 seat concept seems to have the Datsun Go+ in mind. If Maruti can get to plonk in one of its under-development small capacity diesel engines into this contraption that won’t win too many admirers for its looks, we could very well have the making of yet another best sellers whose prime selling points are utility and frugality, and nothing else. As of now, production plans for this concept haven’t been announced. However, considering the Datsun GO+ target segment, a production version of the WagonR 7 seat concept doesn’t seem far fetched.

Hyundai MPV

Hyundai has lined up 3 compact cars for India: a compact SUV, a Grand i10 based compact sedan and a compact MPV. The Compact MPV will arrive in 2015, and we’re yet to get wind of the platform this product will use. Given Hyundai’s understanding of the Indian car market and the car maker’s extensive range of turbo diesel engines, the MPV is likely to be offered with petrol and turbo diesel engine options. Seating capacity and other details of the Hyundai MPV currently remain under wraps.

Mercedes-Benz to launch SLK 55 AMG on December 2

       

       

Mercedes-Benz will launch the new SLK 55 AMG on December 2, 2013 in India.
The new SLK 55 AMG is powered by a 5.5-litre V8 engine that puts out 416bhp and 55kgm of torque. It comes mated to an AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic transmission that has three driving modes – Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M).
It completes the 0-100kph dash in a claimed 4.6 seconds and goes on to an electronically limited top speed of 250kph.
The new Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG will come with the usual enhancements like an AMG body kit, 18-inch AMG wheels and AMG sport seats, among others

Volkswagen evaluating sub-four-metre saloons

German carmaker Volkswagen is in the midst of planning a compact saloon for India. Fast emerging as one of the most profitable segments to be in, the sales of compact saloons are booming despite the downturn in the market. The Maruti Swift Dzire, for example, even in these difficult times, averages approximately 16,000 cars a month. New entrants to this sub-segment are doing well too. Sales of the new Honda Amaze have steadily been rising. Honda sold a total of 9564 Amazes this month, and the trend is still on the up.
As a result, putting together the right compact saloon has become priority number one at Volkswagen India, with the engineering and product teams working flat-out to get the right car to the market.
But what makes for a successful compact saloon? Sure, it’s all about the right price to begin with, but as customers today evolve, there are other essential elements to the cars that are important too. The right amount of space, enough features to excite potential customers and the right powertrain are just some of them.
No wonder then, Volkswagen is pulling out all stops to get things right. Word from inside the company is that the German carmaker, crazy as it may sound, is working not on one car, but two! However, only one car will be finally chosen for production. 
The first of this pair of cars VW is looking at to fulfill the compact saloon role is, obviously, a truncated or chopped Vento. The Vento may basically just be a Polo with an extended wheelbase and boot, but the sub-four-metre version will address many of the shortcomings of both cars. Built on the same 2552mm wheelbase as the Vento, this car will have more space on the inside than the Polo, and because it will be taxed as a compact, it will be much more affordable than the Vento. That’s two birds with one stone. Also, because VW will have to pay less tax, it will have a larger budget to spend on features, options and accessories.
The company, however, is facing a design challenge as the car will have to be heavily modified, both at the front and rear, to make it duck under four metres, and it could look odd. To compound matters, VW wouldn’t be able to sell this car in other markets, so justifying the expense will be difficult.

 

Volkswagen is also looking at the alternative of an even more affordable sub-four-metre car. While the Vento is based on the Polo (PQ25 platform), the company could create a saloon version of the Up city car (PQ12 New Small Family platform) for markets like India, where legroom at the rear is important. The Up currently has a wheelbase of 2420mm. That’s shorter than something like the Dzire at 2430mm, yet longer than the Amaze’s 2405mm. But Volkswagen is unlikely to be able to package the interiors as tightly as Honda has; the latter masterfully uses a slim dashboard and flat seats in the Amaze and Brio for great space efficiency.

The German carmaker could, however, build the Up saloon on the Taigun’s longer 2470mm wheelbase; the Taigun, after all, is built on the same platform as the Up. This would help the manufacturer leverage tremendous economies of scale since the Taigun has all but been signed off for India.
However, whichever car VW opts for, it will have to move forward on a couple of issues before the car comes to market. For a start, there’s the issue of the diesel engine. The company’s 1500cc diesel is already being worked on (coded EA189), but it will have to be ready if VW chooses to go with the sub-four-metre Vento or the car won’t qualify for an excise cut. And should the Up-based saloon be selected, VW will have to work hard to fit its new 1,400cc three-cylinder diesel (coded EA288) under the hood. This engine will, in all likelihood, power the Taigun. But VW will have to extend the nose of the car to make it fit; the engine is a bit too wide.

The other thing Volkswagen may have to do for the Indian market is lower its sky-high quality standards. All Volkswagens, Polos included, are built to the same exacting global standards, which often surpass the quality levels of many competitors. Most of the time, these details are invisible to the untrained eye. And spending money on something the customer can’t see, unfortunately, is a luxury VW can’t afford if it wants to stay competitive with the players in India.
VW is clear; it wants the best possible compact saloon for India, and that’s great news if you are in the market for one.

Refreshed BMW Z4 launched at Rs. 68.9 lakh

BMW has launched the new, facelifted BMW Z4 S-Drive 35i roadster in two variants (both petrol), priced at Rs. 68.9 lakh and Rs. 69.9 lakh ex-showroom. The car was launched at Bavaria Motors, Pune, by  Philipp von Sahr, President, BMW Group India. The Rs. 1 lakh extra is for the Design Pure Traction package, which comes with the unique Valencia orange color and upholstery.

Other colors include Alpine white, mineral grey, glacier silver, black sapphire, crimson red, deep sea blue, mineral white and Orion silver. In terms of design the car gets new headlights with corona rings and LED daytime lights, a new crease along the body line, and flared wheel arches.



It’s a convertible with the roof tucking in neatly into the boot, while all the controls are driver focussed. It is powered by a BMW TwinPower turbo six-cylinder, in-line petrol engine, with two turbochargers delivering 306 bhp of power. It can touch a top speed of 250 kmph, with a 0-100 kmph time of 5.1 seconds. It comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission with three drive modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+).

Safety features include four airbags, stability control, cornering brake control, brake assist, rollover protection and side impact protection.

Maruti Wagon-R StingRay road test and review: Stylized, practical box

The Maruti Wagon-R StingRay is as much about style as it is about practicality. It’s Maruti’s answer to those who found the boxy, plain-Jane Wagon-R too boring. It’s the kind of car that would appeal to a buyer who wants practicality, but doesn’t want to seem uncool among his peers.
The car is mechanically identical to the regular Maruti Wagon-R, but costs about Rs. 25,000 more variant for variant, just for the cosmetic changes. The front-end styling does work well for it, because to the uninitiated, it does look like a new car when viewed up front.
We took a short drive with a deep blue Maruti StingRay VXI to see what the fuss was all about.

Design & styling: Adding a youthful look

Straight up front, the Maruti Wagon-R StingRay looks like someone shrunk a Tata Safari Storme or perhaps blew up a Mahindra e2o. What catches the eye is the twin beam headlamps with projectors for the low beam (the cheapest car to get projector headlamps in India), and the squared off boxy front styling. The chrome grille (which is actually not a grille, but a plastic moulding) adds that pseudo SUV look to it. And Maruti has even put a string of LED lights in the grille, to give it a little more oomph.

The front bumper and grille are different too keeping with the package, while the bonnet is flatter as well. In profile, the only difference you see is again the corners of the front-end, otherwise it’s identical to the regular Wagon-R. The 14-inch alloy wheels do add some freshness and have the standard 155/65 R14 tyres of the Wagon-R on them. At the rear, the tail-lamps have been given a clear-lens treatment along with a chrome look and the applique over the number plate also has “StingRay Wagon-R” emblazoned on it.

Functional interiors

The interiors are all done up in black, which does take away a bit of the spacious feel the grey interiors of the Wagon-R give, but it also adds a bit more of a premium feel to it. Fit and finish is pretty average though. The car comes with comfortable front seats done up in a premium upholstery with “StingRay” embroidered into it. At the rear, it gets 60:40 split folding back rests, which add a degree of versatility in expanding the 180-litre boot’s capacity. It also has a parcel tray as standard.
There are numerous cubby holes for storage including door pockets, two pop-out drinks holders in front of the AC vents (to keep it cool) and two more on the floor console. The car is pretty spacious for four adults – with adequate kneeroom and headroom, while a fifth passenger would be a tight squeeze. It gets adjustable headrests on all four seats. There are two glove boxes for storage as well as a tray under the passenger seat.

Decently equipped

The StingRay VXI option pack we were driving comes with a single driver’s air bag and three-channel ABS with EBD. It also features powered outside mirrors, power windows with driver’s side auto-down and central locking with the remote embedded on the key. The integrated music system can play CD, MP3, USB and Aux-in, along with radio. The car features steering audio controls as well. Other features include fog lamps, a rear wiper and demister and speed-sensitive door locking.
The multi-information display below the speedometer and tachometer includes the fuel gauge, odometer, trip meter, range and average fuel consumption.

Performance and handling

The Maruti Wagon-R StingRay is not really a car that will appeal to enthusiasts, but it does have enough shove to get by in the city quite easily. It is powered by Maruti’s tried-and-tested 1-litre, 3 cylinder K-Series petrol engine that puts out 67 bhp of power and 90 Nm of torque, mated to a five-speed manual transmission driving the front wheels. This engine is pretty refined and loves to be revved.

The car has gearing that’s well suited to city driving and it can effortlessly glide through traffic. Gear shifts are a bit notchy, but the clutch is super light. The electronic power steering too is very responsive and does give a bit of a disconnected feel, with hardly any feedback coming to the driver. That’s not something everyone likes, although it makes the car really convenient to drive.
The car comes with ABS brakes, which inspire a sense of confidence. Body roll is not too evident, but pushing to car to higher speeds is asking for trouble because of its high centre of gravity.

Fuel efficiency

We didn’t have the car long enough to get an exact measure of fuel efficiency, but the display did show we were getting about 13.8 kmpl in city driving conditions with moderate use of the AC. We were doing only short runs and stopping for photo shoots and video filming, but with sustained use a figure of 14 kmpl for city conditions should be easily achievable. Maruti claims this car gives 20.5 kmpl.

What we think

The StingRay injects a dose of freshness into what is otherwise a boring, boxy family hatchback that’s also incredibly practical. Whether the Rs. 25,000 premium you pay for the StingRay is really worth the difference is debatable. We think it’s worth the money if you want the car to stand out. But otherwise, you would be better off with the regular Wagon-R, except that you would miss out on the convenient steering audio controls, and perhaps slightly better headlight throw – otherwise, there’s not much to lose.

2015 Ford Figo-based compact sedan spied

The 2015 Figo will be followed by a compact sedan in India in all likelihood. But will it be too late for Ford?

Yesterday, we brought you pictures of 2015 Ford Figo. Spy photos of the future Figo compact sedan have already appeared online. Both the hatchback and the sedan will come to India only in 2015 which may be too late for the carmaker. The current Figo is already losing ground to other hatchbacks, such as the recently launched Grand i10.



The Ford Classic, a rebranded Mk5 Fiesta sedan, looks increasingly dated in the Indian car market’s entry level sedan space that’s populated by the likes of the Honda Amaze and the Maruti Swift Dzire. The compact sedan space is too big to ignore what with the segment consistently pulling monthly sales figures of over 20,000 units. So, Ford India will retire the Classic in the next couple of years, and will replace this car with a brand new model.



The new car, based on the 2015 Figo hatchback, has already been spotted doing testing duties at the United States. The car will however, be aimed mainly at emerging markets across the globe. Brazil and India are two countries in which Ford will launch the 2015 Figo-based compact sedan. The car is likely to hit Brazil first, in early 2015, after which it could make its way to the Indian car market. In Brazil, the Toyota Etios and Hyundai HB20 will be the prime rivals of the Ford compact sedan.



Like the 2015 Figo, the compact sedan will be built at Ford India’s new manufacturing facility that is coming up at Sanand, Gujarat. With Ford releasing imagery of the 2015 Figo, it isn’t difficult to imagine how the compact sedan version of this hatchback will look like. Apart from a boot attached to the rear, the compact sedan could more or less look like the 2015 Figo in design terms.

As the compact sedan will be based on a modified Mk5 Fiesta, as is the case with the 2015 Figo, engines and transmissions will be shared between the hatchback and sedan versions. Expect the 1 liter EcoBoost turbo petrol and the 1.5 liter TDCI turbo diesel motors to make it to the 2015 Figo based compact sedan’s engine bay. Interiors bits and features of the compact sedan could also be shared with the 2015 Figo.
