The firm has been struggling in the automotive business and now plans to concentrate on utility and electric vehicles to script a turnaround. The turnaround plan will span 3 years, beginning from 2014. Mitsubishi is yet to detail the changes that the next-gen Triton pick up truck will see. A move to a monocoque platform seems unlikely given the Triton platform’s positioning in the utility segment. A body-on-ladder construction is likely to the base of the new Triton platform.
In India too, Mitsubishi has abandoned sedans and hatchbacks to focus on SUVs. So, if Mitsubishi does manage to stick around here until 2015, the current Pajero Sport SUV will get replaced by an all-new model. Currently, the Pajeanaro Sport sold in India is a prime rival to the Toyota Fortuner. Although the Pajero Sport has many pluses to it when compared with the Fortuner, Mitsubishi’s anaemic dealership reach has meant that the Pajero Sport simply doesn’t have the reach of the Fortuner.
The Pajero Sport sold in India is powered by a 2.5 liter turbo diesel engine that outputs 178 PS-400 Nm. The engine is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. While 4 wheel drive is standard, the lack of an automatic gearbox on the Pajero Sport is quite stinging, especially since the SUV costs 30 lakh rupees in many Indian cities. Among other things, Mitsubishi has tied up with the Renault-Nissan alliance to co-develop sedans and electric vehicles. The Japanese automaker continues to remain tight lipped and non-committal about its India plans.
